I put on my alien headband that I made and got to work.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yEcoRFko1e0/UCHQi-dx-5I/AAAAAAAAApo/4fn7FeF4dTs/s1600/Photo+16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yEcoRFko1e0/UCHQi-dx-5I/AAAAAAAAApo/4fn7FeF4dTs/s320/Photo+16.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">See? I told you space was kind of my thing... It's all over my house!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My first projects, if you didn't catch them, were my Voice Levels chart and name plates:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bw5NYD86WjE5YTNydUpYNERRalk/edit" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rWyr2HHOJuQ/UCHQj33v_uI/AAAAAAAAApw/bEw7aa1uWEQ/s320/Space+Voice+Levels+Chart+picture.jpg" width="243" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click to download!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bw5NYD86WjE5V3paU1laMzYwMlE/edit" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dJEF25xN32o/UCHQklEYkhI/AAAAAAAAAp4/dSThhiNvfEM/s320/Name+plates.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click to download!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I added my new Scrappin Doodles clipart to my classroom rules, too. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5TEdIaFZWNUtJalk" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MZrgAK0bRL4/UCHQnb5IgLI/AAAAAAAAAqA/Gpu_tIftcUU/s320/Space+Rules+pic.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click to download!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now for some new ideas. I found an excellent post about Super Improver Walls <a href="http://mrsamandaswholebrainteachingclassroom.blogspot.com/2012/07/super-super-super-improver-wall.html" target="_blank">here</a>, and it finally clicked! The different names and colors for each level overwhelmed me at first, but not when they're spacey!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5a3FLWi1VZGU0ZDA" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dDbELJKUi7Y/UCHQw8TTTnI/AAAAAAAAAqI/HicgNCygzzU/s320/Super+Improver+pic.jpg" width="247" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click to download! </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Each student starts off on the first level and must earn 10 points to move to the next level. I will use foil stars to keep track of the points on colored card stock stars, like Mrs. Shipley advised in her <a href="http://mrsshipleywholebrainteaching.blogspot.com/2012/07/video-tutorial-2-super-improver-wall.html" target="_blank">video tutorial</a>. Students earn points by showing improvement in behavior AND academics. Their improvement goals will become very differentiated and meaningful as they redefine what "growth" means for them. Genius!<br />
<br />
When the student collects 10 stickers on their colored star they get to take it home and travel to the next planet, or level. I'm so tickled that my levels, including the sun and our moon, makes for an even 10!<br />
<br />
The neatest part about the Super Improver Wall (gotta get on board with the acronyms... The SIW) is the photo op at certain levels, denoted on my version with a picture of a satellite.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dHCR6zJyZjw/UCHQ-jyZQSI/AAAAAAAAAqY/qhMctqQ4ZoY/s1600/Super+Improver+Earth+pic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dHCR6zJyZjw/UCHQ-jyZQSI/AAAAAAAAAqY/qhMctqQ4ZoY/s320/Super+Improver+Earth+pic.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
On this level I take a picture of the student with some friends and put it under their star. The picture is posted FACE DOWN. The student must advance off of Earth in order to take the picture home.<br />
<br />
I think my SIW will be a tremendous metaphor for my kiddos as they track their personal growth. <a href="http://mrsamandaswholebrainteachingclassroom.blogspot.com/2012/07/super-super-super-improver-wall.html" target="_blank">Mrs. Amanda</a> even suggested that if you run out of levels, add more! There are so many possibilities... comets, far-away planets, galaxies, nebulae...<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KCNdpiq-b8Y/UCHamkquKAI/AAAAAAAAAq4/cbXbMgyvMuQ/s1600/ps16_16x20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KCNdpiq-b8Y/UCHamkquKAI/AAAAAAAAAq4/cbXbMgyvMuQ/s320/ps16_16x20.jpg" width="256" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Orion Nebula has always been my favorite to look at.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My last new idea has to do with my tables. I have trapezoid tables this year, and I'll probably put them together so I have groups of 6 students at a "table".<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N0zzglyrT8k/UCHYnTWGuwI/AAAAAAAAAqw/LwYgipz7QVI/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N0zzglyrT8k/UCHYnTWGuwI/AAAAAAAAAqw/LwYgipz7QVI/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I want to have an icon at each spot to use when giving directions, getting supplies, and dismissing from tables, even. If I need someone to get paper for their table I could call out an icon and away they go.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eWlKAaoU7k8/UCHQzUdaolI/AAAAAAAAAqQ/e0GbzrGe_oA/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eWlKAaoU7k8/UCHQzUdaolI/AAAAAAAAAqQ/e0GbzrGe_oA/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I would run the icons off on colored paper (they'll be colored inside, of course, not white). I really hope this system works because I want to give students many opportunities to be helpful and "in charge" of something instead of relying on one or two kids a week as a classroom job. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also ran to the toy store yesterday and got a space puzzle for my <a href="http://peaceloveandkinder.blogspot.com/2011/07/100th-day-of-school-linky-party-start.html" target="_blank">100 Days of School project</a>:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-44shjZzHu28/UCHiRJFTxPI/AAAAAAAAArQ/Iku1jfK00xg/s1600/photo-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-44shjZzHu28/UCHiRJFTxPI/AAAAAAAAArQ/Iku1jfK00xg/s320/photo-2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And last, but not least, is a new friend. I've been keeping him in the back of my head for a month now and today I finally got him. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kfDxidow22c/UCHQgXnZ4SI/AAAAAAAAApg/zURdaPtHme0/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kfDxidow22c/UCHQgXnZ4SI/AAAAAAAAApg/zURdaPtHme0/s320/photo.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

Meet NomNom. :)Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05510522073739562127noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433211310478783278.post-13412993861523842002012-08-06T06:35:00.003-05:002012-08-06T06:41:02.842-05:00Breaking Rules!I took all summer to get crafty... and that's far too late! I'm back in a *new* classroom this week and with the new space I'm breaking some old rules in this Monday Made It.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4thgradefrolics.blogspot.com/2012/08/monday-made-it-10-its-start-time.html" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2InsgUsrXu4/UB-eXdYmtVI/AAAAAAAAAi4/z8bStoN20cI/s1600/mondaymadeit2_240x240.png" /></a></div>
<br />
I scored big at some <a href="http://thekinderkid.blogspot.com/2012/08/thrifty-thursday.html" target="_blank">garage sales</a> two Saturdays ago and found a rocking chair for $10, among other things.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jsrA_RFs7nc/UBQ2cYYimuI/AAAAAAAAAho/A1zLkXEwvbk/s1600/2012-07-27+22.48.05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jsrA_RFs7nc/UBQ2cYYimuI/AAAAAAAAAho/A1zLkXEwvbk/s320/2012-07-27+22.48.05.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I never thought I would be a rocking-chair-gal! I always thought they took up too much room and made me look like I was on a throne. When I saw this one, however, I thought I would shed this rule, even though I'm in a tiny portable. Besides, the kiddos will think it is SO cool to sit in it for sharing or whatnot, right? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1TmL5TSd5C8/UB-kcJwDTtI/AAAAAAAAAm0/vM_rls01chs/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1TmL5TSd5C8/UB-kcJwDTtI/AAAAAAAAAm0/vM_rls01chs/s320/photo+2.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I think it's cool with a new purple paint job and... wait for it... GLITTER!!! Which is another rule-breaker... never was into the stuff until now. I know, I know... I'm weird.<br />
<span id="goog_1571716698"></span><span id="goog_1571716699"></span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GUbLSXdsr3g/UB-mjafiibI/AAAAAAAAAoM/YA8ir3UVo6U/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GUbLSXdsr3g/UB-mjafiibI/AAAAAAAAAoM/YA8ir3UVo6U/s320/photo+4.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sealed on with spray gloss, of course! There will be no glitter on my booty, I hope!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My next craft breaks yet another rule... classroom themes. I cheered out loud during a training when Debbie Diller advised to stay away from cluttered themes in favor of choosing one or two colors for classroom decor. I've always thought themes were silly and prided myself on the matchy-matchy color scheme I used instead.<br />
<br />
Well, my new campus is adopting a school-wide theme of "Reading Takes You Places." There's tons of options for hallway bulletin boards and fun pet-names for things relating to this theme. I already knew I was going to recreate this board from my very first year...<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UUsik3fWfnQ/UB-ozYnBxCI/AAAAAAAAAo4/B4k0urkB9Xw/s320/145228_10100303349062920_200300_n.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="320" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Maybe I'll say something like, "Ms. Bueno's Class is going places!" instead</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And I got to thinking... I LOVE space! It's always been a motif in my life so why not *finally* in my classroom? So I ran out... clicked over?... and got some clipart from Scrappin' Doodles and started on plugging my new theme in...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My Voice Levels Chart:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://www.blogger.com/goog_1862789522"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-armLaQigrTM/UB-qC4o2wSI/AAAAAAAAApI/jyO5auaW9jk/s320/Space+Voice+Levels+Chart+picture.jpg" width="243" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5YTNydUpYNERRalk" target="_blank">Click to download!</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Student name plates:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://www.blogger.com/goog_1862789528"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k3Nmmmf3tbY/UB-nL0WPymI/AAAAAAAAAow/LCQaUORQCA8/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5V3paU1laMzYwMlE" target="_blank">Click to download!</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
And more to come!<br />
<br />
I also have been mulling over what I would use this year as a visual for the kiddos when I am busy with a small group or testing. I'm learning that themes can make some decisions easier!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FF39OaRHBhQ/UB-nJ227kEI/AAAAAAAAAog/y2rH4-wyexE/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FF39OaRHBhQ/UB-nJ227kEI/AAAAAAAAAog/y2rH4-wyexE/s320/photo+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Alien headband! </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I can't help putting it on throughout the day and looking at myself in the mirror. I can already hear the kiddos saying, "my teacher is an ALIEN!!!"Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05510522073739562127noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433211310478783278.post-28413029818466316362012-08-02T09:00:00.000-05:002012-08-02T09:00:05.331-05:00Thrifty Thursday!I couldn't celebrate all things thrifty without checking out a garage sale! So last Saturday I ran around to ONLY 3... I must have passed 5 more though to get there! Saturdays are crazy!<br />
<br />
Check out my hoard for... get this... <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">$30!!!</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">WOW!!!</td></tr>

So tickled that I'll finally be a teacher with a rocking chair! I thought I would never get one... but after seeing this $10 bargain I'm inspired to give it some TLC and a place in my classroom.<br />

I finally get to participate in all the crafting linking-up-ness!<br />
<br />

<br />
I've been hunting around thrift stores lately and I finally found a mini-muffin pan! So I chopped up those well-loved crayons from last year and made some new ones!<br />
<br />
I enlisted the boyfriend to help me unwrap them all and he used his grey matter to find the utility knife to slice off the paper! Genius! Especially since I have a whole bag-full left to unwrap.<br />

I also made a SUPER CUTE gift for my girl's night this week. I'm meeting with the ladies from my old school 150 miles away (I moved this summer). This will be my last night playing Pokeno with them and here's my present to some lucky winner, maybe me!</div>

I should probably live in Target. Dollar Tree has had some good finds, too. But the real fun is hunting around in Goodwill and Salvation Army!<br />
<br />
I've always loved going to thrift stores. You'll never know what kind of gems you'll find and excavating them from shelves is half the fun. Dangerous work, too, though. I had a huge wooden mask fall and crash at my feet. And I wasn't even picking in that area!<br />
<br />
Take a look at my latest finds!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CLoqBoCBEC0/UBDTZm_vYHI/AAAAAAAAAfs/TFZ_dIom1S0/s1600/2012-07-23+05.43.59.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CLoqBoCBEC0/UBDTZm_vYHI/AAAAAAAAAfs/TFZ_dIom1S0/s320/2012-07-23+05.43.59.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A sweet painted treasure box for reward smellies and a tin box for magnetic letters!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jL6QVImeHuQ/UBDTevHMvcI/AAAAAAAAAf0/rXzsF7B5NNg/s1600/2012-07-23+05.44.34.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jL6QVImeHuQ/UBDTevHMvcI/AAAAAAAAAf0/rXzsF7B5NNg/s320/2012-07-23+05.44.34.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">ANCIENT compact cameras for... something. Maybe read the room, or science observations, or just plain fun?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
When I saw these I knew I had to have them, but had no idea what they were used for. I guessed that they would be fun for the kiddos to balance or even sit on, but when I tried my tush was way too much for it! Apparently they're used underneath the hands and feet for a core balance workout.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">They'll be used for SOMETHING!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was also tickled to find a crock pot for $6 and a pair of old-fashioned beaters! Can't wait to make applesauce again in class. I used First Grade Parade's <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/2011/09/apples-happy-fall-yall.html" target="_blank">recipe</a> last year and it made the room smell soooo good. </div>

Go check out your local thrift store! </div>

I hope my attempt at some good ideas are looked on as compliments, not stealing!<br />
<br />
I've been following <a href="http://herdingkats.blogspot.com/">Herding Kats in Kindergarten</a> for a while and love seeing her "Where the Wild Things Are" theme pop up in her Monday Made Its. She had a great idea of using <a href="http://herdingkats.blogspot.com/2012/06/placemats.html?showComment=1340082477876">place mats</a> on student tables instead of taping down name plates. Genius! I borrowed her idea and made my own.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5czBQUjNqdWcta00" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BOeMoMlciAg/UA9ddFw6p6I/AAAAAAAAAek/ZvRiRY0guyI/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click to download!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div>
Another idea came from pinterest, as all borrowed ideas come nowadays, but I'm struggling to find the pin! The blogger explained that she's a little tired of the colored clip charts that keep track of student behavior. Her do-gooders knew they were doing better than the others and the ones who had to sit out never could remember what it was they did wrong. Her idea for this year was to place a rule card from Whole Brain Teaching by the students name so that both she and the student would remember what needs to be worked on. She discussed removing the clip chart altogether, but I may combine the two some how. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
At any rate, I borrowed her idea of making small rule cards by shrinking my <a href="http://thekinderkid.blogspot.com/2011/08/trying-not-to-freak-out.html?showComment=1342216629340#c3908321294327514806" target="_blank">rules posters</a> down. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5YjBENGJwbEtkZlU" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X0HTfiKOSxY/UA9mRys5PjI/AAAAAAAAAew/dSPop1ENXQY/s320/Rules+Cards.jpg" width="247" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click to download!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm kicking myself that I didn't pin that idea to any of my boards! Seriously, I've looked around for about an hour for it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This last idea has been tossed around by just about everybody. I made it last year and I'm STILL getting requests from Scribd to share it so I thought I'd just make it a Goggle Doc (why didn't I do that in the first place?) Click to download!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5elVVNm1JZ2FhY00" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xk-c7RWv16I/UA9nUzTtquI/AAAAAAAAAfA/6Crah3EtKXM/s320/Voice+Levels+Chart.jpg" width="243" /></a></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Can you tell I love me some <a href="http://www.scrappindoodles.com/" target="_blank">Scrappin' Doodles</a>? And I'm lovin' all the good ideas!</div>

Not ONCE did I think about school in June... besides the brief pang of guilt that I WASN'T thinking about school. Pinning on Pinterest made me feel better, but then I realized:<br />
<br />
<div style="line-height: 0px; padding-bottom: 2px;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/254664553899375677/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="294" src="http://media-cache-ec0.pinterest.com/upload/254664553899375677_iBRjN3GZ_c.jpg" width="420" /></a></div>
<div style="float: left; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
<div style="color: #76838b; font-size: 10px;">
Source: <a href="http://www.someecards.com/view-card/MjAxMi03NmIwZWI4YTRkNzE3MTQw?key=MjAxMi02MmI2MTllZDY2MDhjYzNm" style="color: #76838b; font-size: 10px; text-decoration: underline;">someecards.com</a> via <a href="http://pinterest.com/kimmietoth/" style="color: #76838b; font-size: 10px; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">Kim</a> on <a href="http://pinterest.com/" style="color: #76838b; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">Pinterest</a></div>
</div>
<br />
<br />
So I might as well get off and start some projects.<br />
<br />
First, I took this:<br />
<br />
<div style="line-height: 0px; padding-bottom: 2px;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/58054282667287746/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://media-cache-ec7.pinterest.com/upload/58054282667287746_FPfTBCJx_c.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="float: left; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
<div style="color: #76838b; font-size: 10px;">
Source: <a href="http://tattlingtotheteacher.blogspot.com/search/label/organization" style="color: #76838b; font-size: 10px; text-decoration: underline;">tattlingtotheteacher.blogspot.com</a> via <a href="http://pinterest.com/ladybugdame/" style="color: #76838b; font-size: 10px; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">Colena</a> on <a href="http://pinterest.com/" style="color: #76838b; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">Pinterest</a></div>
</div>
<br />
<br />
And made this!
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YH2FBIdqy1M/UACRKa67VvI/AAAAAAAAAdw/WyL3ktR_NQM/s1600/2012-07-13+03.18.04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YH2FBIdqy1M/UACRKa67VvI/AAAAAAAAAdw/WyL3ktR_NQM/s320/2012-07-13+03.18.04.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I used cute wooden cutouts and ribbon from Michael's!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I love how it turned out! If I can find a shoe for walkers then I'll replace the sun and cloud.<br />
<br />
I also whipped together some cute mini shaker eggs!<br />
<div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">So THERE's the reason I was hoarding Easter Eggs!<br />
<br /></td></tr>

</div>
<div>
The ever-growing list also includes:<br />

As I reflect on the week I am proud that I kept my cool during district walkthroughs, that my kiddos did fantastic for the sub while I was testing, and that my class, in my opinion, was the most well-behaved on our field trip to the stock show.<br />
<br />
So for the three B adjectives my students would say I'm the best. I tell them all the time that they're not like other classes- they're a part of Ms. Bueno's school family so that makes them the best. I'm pretty sure they think the same of me. I'm also pretty sure that some of my stinkers know that no one else would love them as much as I do, so I truly am the best for them! :)<br />
<br />
To my poor friends I'm always busy, it seems. But never fear! I'm moving back to Austin in June and will finally get to catch up with them.<br />
<br />
To my family I'd like to think they find me bright, both intellectually and spiritually. They know when I'm on fire about something.Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05510522073739562127noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433211310478783278.post-73334966990029746542012-02-26T18:48:00.001-06:002012-02-26T18:52:02.681-06:00Everyday I'm puzzlin'...Hehe! Do your kiddos love puzzles as much as mine do? A new puzzle is always an exciting thing at free choice centers... why not bring that excitement into things they <u>have</u> to do?<br />
<br />
I've been wanting to make a sight word puzzle like Melissa's at <a href="http://chasingcheerios.blogspot.com/2011/11/sight-words-puzzles.html">Chasing Cheerios</a>. I always make a Target run after payday... don't you? I grabbed a few puzzles for this project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-q_pKCC-N9CI/T0rPohpa_kI/AAAAAAAAAc4/shq1X3HWd7Q/s1600/Victoria-20120226-00099.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-q_pKCC-N9CI/T0rPohpa_kI/AAAAAAAAAc4/shq1X3HWd7Q/s320/Victoria-20120226-00099.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now Spongebob and Patrick will help us practice our first 30 sight words during our Daily 5 stations!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I took the same idea to make a number recognition puzzle, too. I had envisioned numbering every piece to 100, but I chickened out. I wasn't sure if having the pieces in a 12 x 9 array, instead of a 10 x 10, would be confusing. Not to mention time consuming.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0MYukek5VI4/T0rPbSLiWZI/AAAAAAAAAcw/3lwJuQILbW8/s1600/Victoria-20120226-00098.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0MYukek5VI4/T0rPbSLiWZI/AAAAAAAAAcw/3lwJuQILbW8/s320/Victoria-20120226-00098.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
So I numbered 30 pieces instead, but then that presented another problem. How would they know how to take it apart during cleanup without ripping up the glued pieces? To differentiate between pieces that are glued and pieces that are numbered I used yellow puff paint. A large dot on the numbered pieces may remind them to take those pieces off for cleanup and leave the others alone. We'll see how it goes.<br />
<br />
Thankful for Sundays and quick projects! :)Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05510522073739562127noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433211310478783278.post-72771162814764216412012-02-20T18:00:00.001-06:002012-02-20T17:47:59.515-06:00When all else fails...go to Target!<br />
<br />
<div style="line-height: 0px; padding-bottom: 2px;"><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/142989356888927736/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://media-cdn.pinterest.com/upload/85146249174473685_ywPZnQAY_c.jpg" width="280" /></a></div></div><div style="float: left; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"><div style="color: #76838b; font-size: 10px;"><div style="text-align: center;">Source: <a href="http://erstwhiledear.wordpress.com/" style="color: #76838b; font-size: 10px; text-decoration: underline;">erstwhiledear.wordpress.com</a> via <a href="http://pinterest.com/nbueno/" style="color: #76838b; font-size: 10px; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">Nicole</a> on <a href="http://pinterest.com/" style="color: #76838b; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">Pinterest</a></div></div></div><br />
<br />
Dare I say I was BORED on a Sunday? I couldn't get anyone to come with me, but I did end up seeing a couple friends there! I scored a new batch of erasers:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O267mOHnRqA/T0GMQifXvDI/AAAAAAAAAco/5ht_YjTtpRM/s1600/Victoria-20120219-00083.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O267mOHnRqA/T0GMQifXvDI/AAAAAAAAAco/5ht_YjTtpRM/s320/Victoria-20120219-00083.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So I made some patterning cards inspired by the <a href="http://prekinders.com/math-patterns/">Color Pattern Cards</a> (scroll to the bottom) made by</div><br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://prekinders.com/blog" target="_blank" title="PreKinders"><img alt="PreKinders" src="http://prekinders.com/images/blog-button.gif" style="border: none;" /></a></div><br />
(PS: She teamed up with Jack Hartman to give blog readers <u>20% off</u> at his website. <a href="http://prekinders.com/2012/02/jack-hartmann/">Here's</a> the post about it.)<br />
<br />
So after quite a bit of finagling with the images I came up with these! (I omitted the lips erasers because I just wasn't feeling 'em).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/82132570/Spring-Eraser-Patterns" style="display: inline !important; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-top: 12px; text-decoration: underline;" title="View Spring Eraser Patterns on Scribd">Spring Eraser Patterns</a><br />
<iframe class="scribd_iframe_embed" data-aspect-ratio="1.2938689217759" data-auto-height="true" frameborder="0" height="600" id="doc_62080" scrolling="no" src="http://www.scribd.com/embeds/82132570/content?start_page=1&view_mode=list&access_key=key-4i8vjrs8y5vbgifj3tp" width="100%"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">
(function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script"); scribd.type = "text/javascript"; scribd.async = true; scribd.src = "http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s); })();
</script><br />
<br />
<br />
There's still time! Go to Target and grab some erasers! And don't forget the 20% off sale at <a href="http://www.jackhartmann.com/">http://www.jackhartmann.com/</a> thanks to <a href="http://prekinders.com/2012/02/jack-hartmann/">PreKinders</a>!Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05510522073739562127noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433211310478783278.post-6606748597458002762012-01-09T21:23:00.000-06:002012-01-09T21:23:30.164-06:00Wait! Wait!!!! (Finally) A Musical Monday?!Ack!!!! Could it be?! I finally have a reason to post a Musical Monday?<br />
<br />
I gave up on this well-intentioned weekly post back in <s>October</s>, oh man, SEPTEMBER! but I was super excited about finding this gem at the library this weekend.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060274751/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&tag=thek0d5-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0060274751"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&Format=_SL160_&ASIN=0060274751&MarketPlace=US&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&tag=thek0d5-20&ServiceVersion=20070822" width="162" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thek0d5-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0060274751" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I introduced Martin Luther King Jr. today and used the book to elaborate. I haven't put on a show for my kiddos in a while and when I sung the text to them I had them HOOKED. When we finished they went on and on about how we should be kind to one another and be thankful that we can be a family at school and what a hero Dr. King is and UGH!!!! Then they sang/hummed/made up their own songs about the beauty of differences during free choice centers. It was wonderful. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Now if you're not up for singing yourself there's always the video: </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/MYXJlfcfFKU" width="420"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">And if you're like me and want to get your kiddos away from staring at a screen and staring at EACH OTHER, you could always download the song by pasting the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYXJlfcfFKU">YouTube url</a> in <a href="http://keepvid.com/">KeepVid</a>.<br />
<br />
I hope we can practice the song enough to sing to our 5th grade buddies on Friday! :)<br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">Miss Farley is giving away this neato sharpener <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2012/01/currently-more.html">here</a>! But first grant me the small satisfaction that my "Currently" matters! ;)<br />

<br />
So I barely gave 2012 a thought, just another year, but when I saw <a href="http://herdingkats.blogspot.com/2012/01/one-more-new-years-freebie.html">Herding Kats in Kindergarten's</a> post about a <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2011/12/one-little-word.html">One Little Word</a> resolution I got to thinking. I wanted it to just come to me, and over a rushed mouthful of raspberries I thought, I really should breathe when I eat... HA! isn't that a result of <s>30</s> <s>20 </s>15 minute lunches!<br />
<br />
My OLW is really appropriate though, not just for when I'm snacking. :)<br />
When I checked in with my doctor a week after surgery he wanted to see me bend my knee. My muscles and my mind clearly resisted the movement after keeping my leg straight for so long. He laughed at me and said, "BREATHE, girl!" and sure enough I could bend it a full 90 degrees!<br />
I do tend to tighten up around all kinds of stress- physical, mental, and emotional... My OLW will remind me to get back up to the "driver's seat" of my brain instead of my more emotional or survival state. This is nothing new, I heard it over and over during various trainings, but a daily mantra would help me throughout the year. :)<br />
<br />
On another note, some thanks need to be given!<br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Only old ladies use canes... are you an old lady?</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Is the doctor gonna give you a new leg?</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Huh, I guess you're not 6 years old anymore...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div>Well, then let me tell you how! You TOO can be a campus <s>clown</s> celebrity with my new KNEE INJURY KIT!*<br />
The best part is... IT'S <u>ABSOLUTELY</u> FREE!!!!**</div><div><br />
</div><div>This kit includes:</div><div><ul><li>ONE seemingly normal weekend visiting family</li>
<li>TWO adventurous and athletic kiddos who you love dearly</li>
<li>and ONE trampoline</li>
</ul></div><div>Simply jump on the trampoline as high as you can with your cousins and land a liiiiitle funny and viola!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">You just sprained your MCL, tore your meniscus, </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">and tore your ACL!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">*Consult your frontal lobe, your doctor, and your family before attempting this kit. They will all say it's not a good idea. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">**Doctor's Appointments, Fancy Knee Braces, Crutches, Canes, Surgery, and Physical Therapy are not included. These items are definitely NOT free.</span></div><div><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">HA!</span></div><div style="text-align: left;">Alright, alright, back to reality. On November 21 I injured my knee as described above. When I showed up at school the next week I struggled to explain a million times over what happened. The worst part was I hadn't even seen a doctor at that point because of the Thanksgiving holiday! I had an appointment later that week when I finally figured out what I did to myself. It didn't change that I had to explain to <u>everyone</u> who asked that I tore my ACL, among other things. "I hurt my knee" was enough for my class... what they told their parents is a different story entirely. :)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I just had surgery the 20th and finally thought to put it in a post. I'm staying pretty positive about it all... I have a lot to be thankful for. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">My question is... have you recovered from an injury while still in the classroom? I'm curious to see what you have taught through!<br />
<br />
Link back to this post, why don't you! You never know, this post could serve as a public service announcement against jumping on trampolines! Spread the word! ;)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

It's hard enough for me to keep up with my kiddos, lesson planning, creating <u>and</u> giving unit assessments, worrying about their performance on computer-based assessments, parent conferences, and a whole list of NON-NEGOTIABLES outlined by my principals (wish I could gripe about this more)... so I apologize if blogging is last on my list! <br />
<br />
I'm feeling worried. It's only November and I have to admit I am feeling BURNT OUT. I feel like I've got so many things to worry about (remember those "non-negotiables"?) that I'm not really good at any one of them. It's not hard to see why so many young teachers leave the profession after just a few years. It's not the kiddos or the curriculum... it's all of the extra STUFF demanded of me.<br />
<br />
I'm sure you could tell me this is "normal" and to hang in there... so please do! I don't know what else I'd so with myself other than teach... but I'm not so sure I'm a good teacher sometimes.<br />
<br />
<br />
Now that <u>that's</u> out of my system!<br />
<br />
I am grateful that my students and I are really connecting this year. I enjoy being with them more than most of the adults at my school! I have some great activities planned next week around a Thanksgiving theme that I know they will love.<br />
<br />
Here's what I plan to do for graphing. We've made several class graphs as a whole group... now it's time for us to create and interpret our own!<br />
<br />
We'll start with a cut-and-paste <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5YTJiNmY0MWItNDA2Yy00M2YyLTgzNjItMzgzNGY5MjllYTlj">graph of Thanksgiving foods</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5YTJiNmY0MWItNDA2Yy00M2YyLTgzNjItMzgzNGY5MjllYTlj"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HV3_xcQp2p8/Tr8K17j3B-I/AAAAAAAAAbw/bW_3oB8v2S0/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Then we'll taste cranberry and apple juice and <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5YjFmNWNiOTctYjI3OC00NDI5LTk3MmMtMTQxODI4ZTI1MjE1">graph our class data!</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5YjFmNWNiOTctYjI3OC00NDI5LTk3MmMtMTQxODI4ZTI1MjE1"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yWA71vmsUbQ/Tr8KtMai4wI/AAAAAAAAAbg/DiI_1a0571c/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Then I'll make sweet potato fries and mashed potatoes the night before so we can <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5NjExNzMwYjctZGNjZC00MTFkLTlkMmEtMjYzMmIzMjk1YWZi">graph our favorites</a> the next day!<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">*update*</span> I fixed the "classed" typo... Thanks, Mrs. I for catching it!<br />
<br />
Annnnd I'm TOTALLY making mashed potatoes in a <a href="http://www.lynnskitchenadventures.com/2010/09/crockpot-mashed-potatoes.html">crock pot</a> at school Wednesday... it's so much more fun to cook WITH them! :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5NjExNzMwYjctZGNjZC00MTFkLTlkMmEtMjYzMmIzMjk1YWZi"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3Bq6EoDUw5I/Tr8Kvr8_H-I/AAAAAAAAAbo/fgamKspn0M0/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My kiddos are sure to love these activities! Here's to one more week then a well-timed break from it all. </div>Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05510522073739562127noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433211310478783278.post-67892641327627698992011-10-25T21:57:00.001-05:002011-10-25T21:58:53.168-05:00Jack-o'-Lantern LabelingWhew! Finally caught up to all the great bloggers out there doing some form of labeling activity. I believe I first caught the labeling bug <a href="http://mrsleeskinderkids.blogspot.com/2011/09/labeling-lesson.html">here</a> from Mrs. Lee's Kindergarten and was inspired Jennifer's <a href="http://firstgradeblueskies.blogspot.com/2011/10/label-it-brown-bear.html">labeling mats</a> at First Grade Blue Skies.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div>Naturally we labeled Ms. Bueno with sticky-notes first. Man, those things didn't stay on at all! They kept falling off but we got the idea. </div><div><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Are you expecting a picture?</div><div style="text-align: center;">HA! I didn't have a label for "third arm" or "parent helper"! ;)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">When that was over we took the strategy to my illustration of a jack-o'-lantern. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Now... I DID have a picture, but I left my camera at school...</div><div style="text-align: center;">'doh!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Then I passed out a quick labeling page to practice. No great shakes, but it certainly helped them feel successful. Of course it looks whacko below, but it was kinda cute, I swear!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
<iframe frameborder="0" height="560px" src="https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=false&embedded=true&srcid=0Bw5NYD86WjE5NWQ5ODgyMGUtNWNhZi00Njg4LTg2NmMtYTk4NDQwOTBlN2I4&hl=en_US" width="100%"></iframe><br />
<br />
Have you gotten the <a href="http://www.fontspace.com/blue-vinyl/print-clearly">PrintClearly</a> font yet? The dashed version is great for handwriting practice and it's what most of my homemade worksheets like this one are created with.<br />
<br />
I'm pleased that this mini-lesson went so well! Tomorrow we'll take the same idea in our writing as we describe how to carve a jack-o'-lantern! </div>Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05510522073739562127noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433211310478783278.post-81445763872072124972011-10-23T16:13:00.000-05:002011-10-23T16:13:00.054-05:00Boo!Did I scare you???<br />
<br />
I mean, I haven't been around much lately... you would've thought I was a GHOST!<br />
<br />
Well, I'm glad you found me today! I whipped up some quick patterns cards to mimic the great ones I found at PreKinders <a href="http://prekinders.com/math-patterns/">here</a> (scroll down to the bottom).<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://prekinders.com/blog" target="_blank" title="PreKinders"><img alt="PreKinders" src="http://prekinders.com/images/blog-button.gif" style="border: currentColor;" /></a></div><div align="center"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">So get out your Halloween erasers from Target to extend <a href="https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0Bw5NYD86WjE5YmY0NGU5YTEtOGQ1NS00ZGU4LTg2ZjctMDM3M2ZmZTZiMGY0&hl=en_US">these</a> patterns! </div><iframe frameborder="0" height="560" src="https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=false&embedded=true&srcid=0Bw5NYD86WjE5YmY0NGU5YTEtOGQ1NS00ZGU4LTg2ZjctMDM3M2ZmZTZiMGY0&hl=en_US" width="100%"></iframe>Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05510522073739562127noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433211310478783278.post-16342232402198809132011-10-10T19:32:00.001-05:002011-10-10T19:36:50.903-05:00When Life Gives You Lemons...make... a pumpkin patch?<br />
<br />
So I'm at school on Sunday getting ready for our pumpkin unit when I get a phone call from one of my team members. We had a field trip scheduled today (a Monday!) and she was calling to tell me...<br />
<br />
they CANCELLED on us!<br />
<br />
We were heading to a community pumpkin patch and they didn't have any small pumpkins to sell the kiddos because their shipment didn't come in! We collected the money, got the permission forms signed, sack lunches were already deducted from the kid's accounts, BUSES were already reserved (so hard to come by in our district!)... What do we do?!<br />
<br />
We made our OWN pumpkin patch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O3Hk8_vZ3sA/TpOMTXLwwII/AAAAAAAAAYg/kaJVizJ2uTw/s1600/IMG_5839.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O3Hk8_vZ3sA/TpOMTXLwwII/AAAAAAAAAYg/kaJVizJ2uTw/s320/IMG_5839.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
No hay bales... no scarecrows... no wooden-cut-out-photo-ops... but A LOT of fun!<br />
<br />
We have a very quick thinker on our team that ran to Lowe's during our planning and FILLED her suv with pumpkins. We unloaded them in the field by the playground we were having lunch at and viola! Makeshift pumpkin patch.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nE3czNB8Zr0/TpOPeEI0rsI/AAAAAAAAAYo/gBXJ2EvAcwg/s1600/302067_2215736911638_1194057901_32064842_1467510619_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nE3czNB8Zr0/TpOPeEI0rsI/AAAAAAAAAYo/gBXJ2EvAcwg/s1600/302067_2215736911638_1194057901_32064842_1467510619_n.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Haha! She couldn't see out the back! </td></tr>
</tbody></table>Best of all, we put our heads together and came up with some clever rotations so that each class would have a turn to choose a pumpkin.<br />
<br />
Mrs. Yandell graphed what jack-o-latern face each class wants to carve (pictures soon).<br />
<br />
I paraphrased Pumpkin Circle to talk about the plant cycle (it has such great photos of pumpkin flowers!)<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=thek0d5-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=ss_til&asins=1582460787" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;"></iframe></div><br />
Mrs. Baros helped the children choose a pumpkin and Ms. Alvarado helped them organize a pumpkin rolling race!<br />
<br />
It was a complete success! I am so proud of my team for pulling it together.Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05510522073739562127noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1433211310478783278.post-80183562039609129662011-09-26T18:43:00.001-05:002011-09-26T18:45:54.187-05:00Musical Monday: ...or not!Sorry, no music here. But at least I committed to making a post, right? No? <br />
<br />
Well, I just have to share some of my favorite stories that I *actually* remember:<br />
<br />
Lil' Miss Sassy: "Teacher, are you married?"<br />
Me: "No, I am not."<br />
Lil' Miss Sassy: "WHAT?"<br />
Me: "Yep. I don't want to be married!"<br />
Lil' Miss Sassy: "Ah! That is SO sad!"<br />
<br />
Other Lil' Sassies regularly like to draw Ms. Bueno with a baby in her belly, with high heels, and with fancy dresses (I guess I haven't worn a dress yet!)<br />
Ha!<br />
<br />
Pigtails: (makes noises with her mouth).<br />
Me:" ____, we're not making noises right now."<br />
Pigtails: "Oh! We're not making noises right now?"<br />
Me: "No. We need to be quiet in the hall."<br />
Pigtails: "So no noises right now?"<br />
Me: "No noises. Please put a bubble in your mouth."<br />
Pigtails: "Oh! I can make them at home?"<br />
Me: "Yes, you can make noises at home. Right now we need to be quiet."<br />
Pigtails: "Oh, ok. (Says to a friend) I can make noises at home."<br />
<br />
While responding to The Three Little Pigs...<br />
<br />
Me: "Who can raise their hand and tell me a main event from this story? Yes, ___?"<br />
Ponytail: "The wolf should'a been a STAR."<br />

Hear me out! I can get so much done when no one else is around!<br />
Today's post is dedicated to teachers who work 7 days a week and work with what they've got! I found new places for things and rediscovered things I had! Yes, even after unpacking my room just a couple months ago I forget what I have.<br />
<br />
I finally put together a little paper organizer the teacher before me had left behind at the old campus. When I put it on a covered storage tub next to my *tiny* office area it made such a cute and organized space! I finally have everything together!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T3qy1H9hHX8/Tn5blJkbTSI/AAAAAAAAAXU/MLb3kI4xxuA/s1600/IMG_5729.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T3qy1H9hHX8/Tn5blJkbTSI/AAAAAAAAAXU/MLb3kI4xxuA/s320/IMG_5729.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Can you spy Pete? I talk to him throughout the day... I'm not crazy, I swear.<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;"><br />
</span></span></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>We practiced this math game this week but I had to use little boxes for the jewels. I finally found my drawstring bags as I was cleaning today! It makes counting the jewels that much more fun!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PrKW1ZDm0VU/Tn5bUKW3m2I/AAAAAAAAAXM/WPHS_XdwGXA/s1600/IMG_5725.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PrKW1ZDm0VU/Tn5bUKW3m2I/AAAAAAAAAXM/WPHS_XdwGXA/s320/IMG_5725.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">They're a little hard to see, but I have 12 bags filled with different combinations of 5 jewels!</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And then I found these and I thought you could help me... What do I do with them???</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z8wu6UepQxQ/Tn5bMeCHC1I/AAAAAAAAAXI/ZJ_BKXqVrl4/s1600/IMG_5723.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z8wu6UepQxQ/Tn5bMeCHC1I/AAAAAAAAAXI/ZJ_BKXqVrl4/s320/IMG_5723.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

What a nice award to be passed around! Jennifer at Herding Kats in Kindergarten was kind enough to think of me when paying forward the feel-goodness of being recognized.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><a border="0" href="http://herdingkats.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j429/Kellysavenue/Jennifer%20Knopf%20%20%20GIVEAWAY/DONE/th_4884567b.png" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">Have you seen her cute new blog design? I love the <a href="http://herdingkats.blogspot.com/search/label/Freebie">freebies</a> tab up at the top for easy access! Here's a quick note to my blogging buckaroo:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #8e7cc3;">Dear Jennifer,</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #8e7cc3;">Thank you so much for giving ME a pick-me-up in a slow blogging month. I so appreciate you taking the time to comment on my posts lately. Please know that your comments remind me that I DO have something to offer the blogging world and empower me to keep it up. I hope we can connect more in the future!</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Now for the rules of this award:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;"></span></div><div align="center" class="separator" style="margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: center;">1. Thank the person/people that nominated you and provide a link back to their blog. <span style="color: blue;"></span></div><div align="center" class="separator" style="margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: center;">2. Share 7 things about yourself.<span style="color: blue;"></span></div><div align="center" class="separator" style="margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: center;">3. Pass this award along to 15 other blogs that you have discovered</div><div align="center" class="separator" style="margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Let's move on to the second rule then!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Seven Things About the Kinder Kid</span></div><div style="text-align: left;">1. I could eat spaghetti every day. With sauce, with lemon and butter, with vegetables, with chicken, with cheese... if I needed to choose a last meal it would be with my mom's meatballs.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">2. I am a huge gourmet soda fan. Yes, gourmet. Not the big corporate brands- little bottlers and international sodas are more fun. I visited the coolest store called the <a href="http://www.sodapopstop.com/">Soda Pop Stop</a> in Los Angeles and brought back two boxes of bubbly beverages on the plane! I even met the owner, John Nese, who is the sweetest guy.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MiL-z_yofCQ/TnwFJkVtNuI/AAAAAAAAAWw/iIFYJJZ7-LI/s1600/229792_2285053448714_1320220457_2716613_5056387_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MiL-z_yofCQ/TnwFJkVtNuI/AAAAAAAAAWw/iIFYJJZ7-LI/s320/229792_2285053448714_1320220457_2716613_5056387_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">3. I have a "See Them Live Before They Stop Touring"list. I saw Beck and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at ACL. Cake for New Years '10 was so. much. fun. I need to catch Modest Mouse, Gorrilaz, and OkGo soon! Their tour dates have never matched my schedule. :(</div><br />
4. I have made some pretty neat pieces of jewelry in the past couple of years. I'm making this Dr. Who beaded scarf for a friend, wish me luck!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://blog.craftzine.com/beaded_dr_who_scarf_necklace.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="213" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">(This is just the example... I hope I can get it right!)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>5. I have 5 pairs of Vans... The yucky looking green and blue pair are 8 years old! I can't seem to part with them! I want so badly to get some in my school's colors but I'm pretty sure they would be frowned upon as too casual :(<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gRzrcO3bNbw/TnwJRMzU7II/AAAAAAAAAW0/17Hfo1EAXm8/s1600/224584_10100738836737130_7952901_69371249_8228491_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gRzrcO3bNbw/TnwJRMzU7II/AAAAAAAAAW0/17Hfo1EAXm8/s320/224584_10100738836737130_7952901_69371249_8228491_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
6. I have a few nerdy celebrity host crushes... Alton Brown from Good Eats, Adam Savage from Mythbusters and Anthony Bourdain from No Reservations are such charming, hilarious, and my-kind-of-cerebral guys! (I think my boyfriend has similar qualities, too, heh!)<br />
<br />
7. I hate walking barefoot on tile, I love sleeping with <u>two</u> blankets swaddling me, and I find it really hard to drink enough water during the day.<br />
<br />
Next rule! 15 blogs that I want to pay this forward to:<br />

We definitely need some review on 4 and 5 before we move on to patterns. YouTube to the rescue!<br />
<br />
Laura from <a href="http://kinderkraziness.blogspot.com/">Kinder Kraziness</a> has been sharing some cute Sesame Street videos and I stumbled upon this one from a few years ago! I LOVE Feist! What a cute take on the song!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/fZ9WiuJPnNA" width="420"></iframe></div><br />

Then I went with trusty old TMBG for a 5 video!<br />

I have so much catching up to do here, but I <u>still</u> feel like I'm always running around, no time to sit down at the computer! I did get a tip from Jennifer at <a href="http://herdingkats.blogspot.com/">Herding Cats in Kindergarten</a> about these quick handwriting videos:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/AXVklO17Dbw" width="420"></iframe></div><br />
I made a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/nbueno08#grid/user/5BACF8244E603064">channel</a> on YouTube to keep 'em all together! Not very musical, but it'll have to do for today.Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05510522073739562127noreply@blogger.com1
